Liu, Yang is an associate professor in the School of Computer Science. He obtained his B.Sc. from Shaanxi Normal University in year 1993, and M.Sc./L.D.from Peking University in year 2000/2003 respectively. His research interests include Chinese Information Processing, Language Knowledge Engineering, etc.

Dr. Liu has published more than 20 research papers, such as COLING, CCL, CLSW, J CHN INFO PRC, J CHN SCI TECH INFO, J CHN COM SYS, etc. He has chaired or participated in more 10 research projects including NSFC, NSSF, China-Korea Joint Program, 863 Project, 973 Program, etc. in recent years. He also won the National Excellent Doctorate Award, the 1st prize of the Ministry of Education's Sci. & Tech. Progress Award (5/9) , the 1st prize of the Electronic Information Sci. & Tech. Award of China Electronic Society (5/10) and the 2nd prize of National Sci. & Tech. Progress Award (4/10) in year 2005/2007/2010/2011respectively for contributions to Chinese language resources.

His main research achievements are summarized as follows:

1) Work related to researches and construction of the global WordNets: As for the Princeton WordNet, he found and reported two kinds of inappropriate hierarchies within it, namely cases of rings or isolators. Considering effective generation of the bilingual WordNets, he put forward an evolving model for inheriting and transforming the extant monolingual data and applied it to English and Chinese languages. Construction of the Chinese Concept Dictionary (CCD) has benefitted a lot from it and the data achievements has licensed to research institutions and companies at home and abroad.

2) Work related to knowledge representation of Chinese lexical semantics: In the previous researches in resources of Chinese lexical semantics, word-formation has been used but not regarded as a valuable form of knowledge representation. We discussed Chinese lexical semantics from three aspects, that is, word structure analysis, morphemic concepts anchoring and meaning connection. Based on these, a novel lexical knowledge representation called semantic sequence has been brought forward, by using a sequence of morphemic concepts to describe the whole meaning of a Chinese word. Construction of the Chinese Object-Oriented Lexicon (COOL) has been in progress for years and tested in sense prediction of Chinese unknown word and Chinese word similarity computing. Data and API of COOL is to be released in near future.
