Xiao, Zhen’s research interests span several areas of distributed systems and machine learning, including cloud computing, big data, system virtualization, deep learning and reinforcement learning.
Dr. Xiao has published more than 50 research papers, mostly in top-tier conferences and journals, such as USENIX ATC, SOCC, TPDS, TC, and TOCS. According to Google Scholar, the total number of citations for all his papers is 4185 (h-index 30) as of April 2017. Among those citations, 1758 are since year 2012. He has served in the Technical Program Committee of various international conferences including USENIX ATC, ICDCS, WWW, and DSN, and as Track Chair of WWW 2014, Vice Chair of ICDCS 2007, etc.. He received a Teaching Excellence Award in 2010.
Dr. Xiao has served as the Principal Investigator (PI) for about ten research projects including NSFC, 863 project, CNGI, etc. His research achievements include: (1) the development of a distributed machine learning framework where users can migrate existing single machine programs, written in any programming language, to the distributed environment with minimal modification; (2) an efficient deterministic replay system in multiprocessor environments with hardware virtualization extensions; (3) various optimizations for MapReduce-like large scale distributed systems.
